My Latest Hunts!

Here they are as I found them!
I like to take the camera out in the creeks with me to photograph my finds before I ever touch them. There's something magic about that moment of discovery that is gone so quickly. Here they are, untouched by human hands for thousands of years at the moment of the photo. Enjoy!

HERE IS A GREAT SHOT OF MY FAVORITE RIVER RIGHT AFTER A GOOD RISE

Clear water, shale bottom, bluff banks, and lots of gravel. When rains come, the sides sluff in and the rocks and artifacts wash up on the gravel bars. Every rain makes it a whole new hunting ground.  Ya just wait for the water to drop and go pick em up!

JULY 5, 2004 - KILLER SCALLORN

I went on an early morning river ramble with my buddy Todd and found this dandy, 1 1/2" bird point lying flat out!

Nice big Archaic Point!

I found this one on my last hunt of 2006.  Someone had been to the site before me, but they didn't walk up the wash where this one was lying!  It is probably a Delhi point, and measures 2 7/8" long - a nice sized point for our region.

A RAINY DAY IN DECEMBER 2005!

It was wet from the drizzle, and just shining and screaming "Take me home!"   So I did - a killer Carrollton, over 2 1/2", thin and finely made.

Feb. 17, 2007 . . . back to the river!

WEe rarely get bird points out of the river, but this one was almost glowing, it was so obvious - and it turned out to be whole!!

Perhaps the best in situ shot of all time . . . .

It is with great sadness I report that I did not find this point myself . . . it was found, lying atop a mud clod just as you see it, by my friend Rhonda as she and her husband Darrell were walking a creek together on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005.  It is one of the finest points I've ever seen from North Texas, and the incredible way it was laid out makes this the best in situ shot I've ever seen.  I keep it on my desktop as an inspiration for my next hunt!

SOMETIMES THEY'RE JUST LAYING THERE!

This was my first complete Paleo in over a year - a dandy little Dalton, lying cleaned off and flat out!!

JUNE 30, 2004 - YEEEHAW!!!!

I was out hunting yesterday when I spotted this little gem of a Plainview drill lying in shallow water, flat out and wide open.  What a dandy!  It's about 1 1/2" long.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!

I took the afternoon off work on Dec 13 2005 to celebrate my 42nd birthday and found this dandy Dalton lying fully exposed in the shallow water!  I wound up with 15 points and a celt that day - what a trip!!

Not exactly in situ . . .

But this is how points roll out on the screen when I go digging at my friend's ranch in Central Texas.  For a cleaned up shot of this one, look on the Archaic Points and Miscellaneous page.

Oddball find, April 1, 2006 . . . .

I had hunted with no luck . . . not even a broken one, for over four hours when I spotted this beauty lying in the edge of the water.

From the same creek . . .

Another atypical North Texas point. The picture doesn't do this one justice.  It is wide and thin, nearly three inches long, and heavily ground in the notches.  No idea what type to call it.  My friend Raymond Gathright found a killer black Gary about 2 1/2" long the same day.  When the weather cools, I'll be in this creek again, you can count on it!

MY BEST IN SITU SHOT EVER . . . .
Although the point turned out to be not nearly as nice as it looked! It's a rather battered grey Scottsbluff (see Paleo Page), but it had the courtesy to show me its "Best Side Up"!
This point will always have a sentimental value for me, since I found it in the company of Texas Artifact hunting legend Nolan E. Preston, and his colorful partner "Red" Sprowl.
Got this one today (July 2, 2004). I've found lots of teeth, both ancient and modern, in the river, but this is the first drilled tooth pendant I've ever found!
