Indiana Smith and his Texas Artifact Collection
Welcome to my website! My name is Lewis B. "Indiana" Smith and since 1978 I have collected Texas Indian artifacts and fossils. This page is mainly devoted to my hobby and my collection. It is a work in progress that will be expanded and updated every so often, so be sure and check back in every now and then to look at new pics and content. I want to thank all my friends from ArrowheadForums.com and the PROS artifact forum, who have supported and encouraged me! I am in my 40's and live in Northeast Texas. In addition to collecting artifacts, I am a supply pastor, Christian School teacher, karate instructor, amateur writer, and general outdoor enthusiast. Some of the pages here reflect those other interests and passions of mine, but I created this primarily as a site for those who share my enthusiasm for the handcrafted tools of the first Americans. BY THE WAY, you'll notice a new picture of me to the left of this column. Over the last year I have gotten to do some digging at a privately owned ranch in Central Texas and found some killer points. This is me at the end of a hard day's hunt in June of 2008. I appreciate your visiting my website and hope you'll come back soon!

TABLE OF CONTENTS
These are all the pages I am planning for my site at the moment. PALEO POINTS - These are the oldest artifacts found in North America, and among the most finely made. Here you'll see pictures of some of my very best finds from the Paleo era. ARCHAIC POINTS - The artifacts date from about 8,000 to 2,000 years of age, and are sometimes very wellmade and often fairly crude. They constitute the bulk of my collection. This page has a lot of available photo blanks, so it's also a catch-all page for extra pics. BIRD POINTS - A common misnomer, these are actually bow and arrow points, which can be distinguished from the larger spear (or "dart") points by their small size and extreme thinness. Texas bird points are among the finest found anywhere in the U.S. FLINT TOOLS - Various items in the Native American toolkit, some finely made, some crude, all a part of the way of life for our aboriginal inhabitants. GROUND/POLISHED ARTIFACTS - These stone artifacts are not made by chipping but by grinding and polishing them into the desired shape. Each one of these artifacts represents a LOT of hours of labor! IN SITU SHOTS - I like to take my camera with me in the field, and these are some of the resultant shots. An artifact is never as pretty as it is in that split second before you pick it up, so I try to preserve that moment forever! MY FOSSILS - I live in an area where arrowheads and Cretaceous fossils wash up on the same gravel bars. Here are some of my best fossils finds. SURFACE HUNTERS OF TEXAS - This is a club that I helped organize ten years ago, and still play a very active role in. Find info on how to join! UECHI-RYU KARATE - At long last, here is the promised page on the karate style I've been involved in, off and on, since 1989. INDY'S BIGGEST FIND - I recently located the skeleton of a huge mosasaur in a nearby creek - after a friend and I had found scattered pieces of bone washed down from the site for several years. This page details the exciting excavation of this massive beast. INDY'S RANT - Read about the progress of Texas Senate Bill 1829, which would legalize surface collecting of artifacts on all state-owned waterways in Texas. LATEST HUNTS - This page chronicles my latest expeditions in search of artifacts, and the results thereof.

APRIL 13, 2009 - Another busy school year and I have let the old website suffer the consequences again! Not a bad year artifact-wise thus far; check my "Recent Hunts" page for some pictures of my latest finds. But the big news is on the legislative front. My proposal, contained on "INDY'S RANT" page, has been written into a Bill by the Texas Senate. See INDY'S RANT for the latest on Senate Bill 1829, which will legalize collecting on all Texas waterways!
Also, don't forget the upcoming SHOT show on April 25, 2009, here in Greenville. Email me for table reservations! See the SHOT page for details.
Dec. 16, 2008 - It has been a busy fall, but I have had time to get out some. Added some outings to my "Recent Hunts" page. I have found over 30 in my last few trips, combined, and a few nice ones. Enjoy the update! Nov. 13, 2008 - Updated the "Latest Hunts" page with my most recent outings. Some nice artifacts there for you to check out!! Sept. 19, 2007 - Man, school starts and I am busier than a mosquito in a nudist colony!!! But I have snuck out a time or two, and made a really cool find last Saturday when the remnants of Hurricane Ike roared thru. My friend Todd and I hit a spot we feared would be covered up again with all the rain, and you'll have to go to the "Recent Finds" page to see what I got . . . . IT'S WORTH THE CLICK!!!! August 10, 2008 NEW PAGE ADDED!! Check out the menu bar and navigate to my "Latest Hunts" page, where you can view my last few expeditions into the wild. Hopefully I will update this page every time I go hunt . . . as long as I find something, that is! MASSIVE UPDATE, July 23, 2008! BOY, I have really let my site be neglected! My apologies to all who have visited looking for new pictures and information. Well, I have gone through the entire site over the last two days and have tried to put something new on each and every page. All the photo pages have at least one new picture, and I have updated information about SHOT, the new legisaltive proposal, and tons of other stuff. Come on in, browse around, and check out every page!! There is lots of good stuff here! In situs, new artifacts, better pictures of some of my old finds - you will find something you haven't seen here before, guaranteed!
<> IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING, I USED TO SAY NONE OF MY ARTIFACTS ARE FOR SALE. NOW THAT I HAVE TWO KIDS ENROLLED IN CHRISTIAN SCHOOL, I HAVE HAD TO LET GO A FEW PIECES TO PAY TUITION. STILL, I PREFER TO KEEP MY POINTS. I WORKED TO HARD TO FIND THEM, AND I WOULDN'T WANT TO ROB YOU OF THE JOY OF FINDING YOUR OWN! KEEP YOUR EYES TO THE GROUND! |
You can E-mail me at this address. Give me a holler!

2006 - A GREAT YEAR FOR BIRD POINTS!
These are my best bird points of 2006. What a great year for artifacts in general, and bird points in particular! I have another 30 - 40 that are whole enough to count but either too crude or too dinged up to go in my "good" bird point frame. The Perdiz is still king, at 2 1/8" inches, but there are plenty of dandies here, including one of my favorite East Texas types - the Steiner. They are the ones with all the little stickers on the blade edge.
